Monmouth College SOfIA 2015

Dr. Christine D. Myers, Emma Vanderpool ’17 & Salomon Perez ’19
The recent Steampunk trend in literature & film, that combines Victorian costumes & characters with industrial & science-fiction technology, when done well, is grounded in solid historical scholarship. In this SOfIA project students will start by reading a Steampunk detective novel that was based by the author, in part, on Dr. Myers’ own research. We will analyze the connections between the two and the effectiveness (or lack thereof) with which the historic facts were used to create the fictional storyline. During the second and third weeks, students will select their own piece of Steampunk fiction -- whether a novel or film or television episode -- and research the historical inspirations used to create the world in which the story is set.
