Extra Credit Options

Due no later than classtime on Wednesday 17 September.

For a possible 10 pts. total extra credit to be added to your final paper grade of the course, you may do either one or both of the following:

  • #1 - Interview a member of the Cornell administration (who you do not already know)
  • #2 - Interview a Cornell faculty member (who you do not already know...so not your advisor)

Attached you will find 3 questions to ask each person, to which you must add at least 2 questions of your own. You may ask the questions in any order that feels comfortable to you. Once you have interviewed someone, you will need to write up the results, along with letting me know what you hoped to find out before you spoke with them. You may interview one administrator and one faculty member, and you should write up each separately (each write up worth 5 pts.). Your final written pieces should each be 2-3 pages in length (typed, double spaced, in 12pt. font).

When you decide who you wish to interview, you should go to their office and ask if they can spare 5-10 minutes to talk with you as part of an assignment for class (say which class too). They may not have time at that precise moment, so be prepared to set up an appointment at a later time or date. It should go without saying that you should be polite in talking with each person, and you should be reasonable in deciding what additional questions you wish to ask. Also, there is a good chance they will want to ask you some questions too, so be prepared to have a nice conversation...

The goal of this assignment is to give you an opportunity (and the incentive) to take an assertive role on campus. It is important for all Cornell students to know that this is your college and you should have the confidence to ask questions of those in authority when you need to.

If you would like suggestions on whom to interview, feel free to ask (your RA or neighbors may also have good suggestions for you). An obvious choice of faculty member would be whomever you are having class with next block (assuming it is not me or your advisor). We will be signing up for people to interview during class (and will be selecting the campus administrators at random), so that no one person gets inundated with students completing this project.

Again, this is an extra credit assignment, so you do not need to complete it unless you wish to.
